A Lowestoft School is celebrating one of its former pupils - as Red Oak Primary School (formerly known as Fen Park) honour ex-England and Ipswich Town Football Club player Terry Butcher - by naming their sports hall after him.
A Lowestoft School is celebrating one of its former pupils - as Red Oak Primary School (formerly known as Fen Park) honour ex-England and Ipswich Town Football Club player Terry Butcher - by naming their sports hall after him.
The ceremony was marked by a visit from Terry - who unveiled a golden plaque bearing the new name of the sports hall.
A new football tournament for girls and boys also kicked off to mark the occasion… with the winners lifting the Terry Butcher Cup - whch was fittingly won by - Red Oak Primary School.
England and Ipswich Twon footballing legend, Terry used to attend the school when he was a boy. The school name changed fro Fen Park to Red Oak Primary School in 2014, when it became an academy school.
Terry was also made an honorary life ambassador of the school - and also presented it with a signed England shirt to go in the hall.
There was the unveiling of a golden plaque with his name on it above the sports hall entrance. Students also presented him with an award for his footballing achievements and presenting him with a Red Oak Primary School sports team shirt.
A new football tournament called the Terry Butcher Cup, that primary schools from around North Suffolk will competed in every year and on his old school’s grounds.
Terry’s old school Red Oak won the girls cup and also the boys cup! The schools competing this year were Red Oak, Grove, Westwood and Reydon primary schools.
