Saxmundham Town Council has voiced ‘strong concerns’ over plans for a huge energy development.
Sealink is a National Grid project - wants to build a 26 metre high converter station on the outskirts of the town.
The council says that there are significant implications for many communities along the proposed route, including Saxmundham, Sternfield, Benhall, Friston, Kelsale, and Carlton.
People can still have their say on the Sealink project proposals.
This is the start of a statutory examination process for the proposed high-voltage electricity connection between Suffolk and Kent which includes a 26m high converter station on the outskirts of Saxmundham and extensive cabling to Suffolk’s heritage coast. The Sealink project has significant implications for several communities along the proposed route.
The Town Council has expressed its serious concern about the impact of the project—particularly the substantial infrastructure planned within and around the parish. These include the environmental and visual effects of the proposed converter station and associated development, but also the lasting implications for the town’s identity, future growth, and quality of life for its community.
“We are fully engaged in the examination process, and we have registered our opposition to this development but, should it be granted consent, we will do everything in our power to ensure the best possible outcome is secured for Saxmundham and our wider community,” said the Chair of Saxmundham Town Council, Councillor John Findlay. “We will continue to challenge and scrutinise the details of the proposal wherever we believe the interests of Saxmundham are at stake. We are also working on imaginative and positive proposals to enhance this area as National Grid’s plans are clearly at odds with the character and beauty of our rural landscape. The Council remains concerned that there will be no direct benefits to local communities from either the construction or long-term operation of this major energy infrastructure.”
This is the public’s last opportunity to have their say to influence the outcome. Every comment, question, and expression of concern adds weight. Therefore, Saxmundham Town Council encourages residents, local organisations, and other stakeholders to stay informed and participate actively. The Town Council will continue to support public involvement with straightforward updates via its website, social media, and printed materials. Full details on how the public can take part in the examination process will be released in due course.
