It happened in the early hours of Saturday morning (23rd October 2021) at 1.37am on the A143 Beccles Road near to the junction with Lound Road.

The crash involved three vehicles, a silver Mercedes A-Class and a white Scania lorry, which were travelling towards Bradwell and a white VW Caddy van which was travelling towards Beccles.

The Mercedes and a VW were involved in a collision and the front seat passenger of the VW van, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital but sadly died a short time later from his injuries. Drivers of both the Mercedes and VW suffered injuries and were taken to the James Paget University Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles caught fire after the collision, damaging the road, resulting in the road being closed between the Belton crossroads and Caldecott Hall until today (Monday 25 October 2021) for repairs.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 37-year-old man, was later arrested on suspicion of drink driving, drug driving and causing death by dangerous driving. He was taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre for questioning and released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information concerning the driving manner of the Mercedes prior to the incident.
