Lowestoft's Holocaust Memorial Day

    Across Lowestoft, a series of ceremonies and events have taken place to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

    Lowestoft Town Council organised three events throughout the day, which began at the East Coast Cinema, where a ceremony included a reflective speech given by Professor Lawrence Goldman, Emeritus Fellow in History, St Peter’s College, Oxford and live music performance by Jewish performers “Da Marjanbo”.

    Then at it was over to Lowestoft Railway Station to remember Lowestoft's connection to the Kindertransport. There was be a series of reflections and poetry given by Lowestoft Town Councillors and local academy schools. This event also included the laying of wreathes.

    Finally, it was on to join local school  children who joined the international community in placing 80 decorative candles as part of the “80 candles for 80 years” campaign.

    This year's events were particularly poignant as it marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia and the 25th anniversary of the Stockholm Declaration.
