The man who took care of the occupants a famous East Suffolk roundabout has been honoured by Ditchingham Parish Council.
Gordon Knowles was known as the "Ole Chicken Man of Bungay.’ For more than 20 years he took take of the 300 chickens that used to live on the A143 roundabout just outside of town.
The chickens pre-date the A143 and the roundabout; it's thought they had escaped from a nearby farm. There were attempts by the Norfolk county council over the years to remove the chickens but by 2006 the flock had dramatically increased in size without clear explanation. The RSPCA removed the six remaining birds in 2010.
A new lectern has been installed telling the story of the Mr Knowles and the chicken roundabout. It's located on the grass verge between Smokey Joe’s and the A143 junction.
Knowles died in 2020.
