Lowestoft’s Third Crossing Approved

Suffolk County Council’s planning application for the construction of the third crossing in Lowestoft – has been approved.

Grant Shapps, The Secretary of State for the Department of Transport, announced his decision, following a year-long process – which effectively sought planning permission from the Department of Transport to build the bridge over Lake Lothing.

For decades, talk of a third crossing for Lowestoft has often dominated local politics and been a hot topic of conversation among people in and around the town – and news that the bridge has been given the go ahead has been widely welcomed.

Waveney MP, Peter Aldous, said he was extremely pleased for all those involved and for everyone who lives and works around Lowestoft – adding that the Third Crossing can also be the foundation stone, on which an ambitious, compelling and sustainable post Covid-19 local economy can be built.

Meanwhile, Leader of East Suffolk Council, Steve Gallant, said that most importantly, this news is for the people of Lowestoft, who know better than anyone how important the bridge will be.

Councillor Gallant hailed the announcement as a ‘landmark’ moment and also said that there was a bigger picture – with East Suffolk Council currently leading Lowestoft’s bid, for a chunk of the Government’s £1.6 billion Towns Fund – and a strong belief that the town has a genuinely exciting future.

As for the next steps, a report is intended to be taken to Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet meeting in July, so it can consider the details of the planning permission, the outcome of the construction tendering process, the final project cost estimate and the timetable for construction.
