THE ARTS SOCIETY SOUTHWOLD MONTHLY LECTURE
Artistic innovation in the Renaissance is usually associated with Italy, but equally momentous developments occurred in the Netherlands, as Paula Nuttall, an international authority on this topic, argues. The sophisticated oil technique of Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, with its unrivalled potential for realistic depiction, was widely admired and imitated in Italy, as were Netherlandish approaches to landscape, and portraiture. This lecture charts the impact of early Netherlandish painting in Italy, from the activities of Italian merchants in Bruges, collectors such as the Medici in Florence and the travels of artists, to the responses of painters, including Piero della Francesca, Giovanni Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci
Director of V&A Medieval and Renaissance Year Course. Specialist in Renaissance art, both Italian and northern European, on which she has published widely, notably From Flanders to Florence: the Impact of Netherlandish Painting 1400-1500 (Yale, 2004). Has collaborated on major exhibitions, including Jan van Eyck: an Optical Revolution (Ghent, 2020). Formerly lecturer at the Courtauld Institute and the British Institute of Florence.
