The route is known as ‘The Garden of Suffolk’ and goes through a lovely rural part of the county. We’ll climb from the valley floor at Saxmundham and then into open countryside. From there it’s across and alongside arable fields and through wooded sections until we get to Rookery Park. We then quickly descend into Yoxford for our lunch stop (we’ll take shorter stops along the way – so bring some snacks and drink).
At Yoxford there’s a choice of the Kings Head pub, The Black Dog Deli, or bring a picnic lunch; St Peter’s church is directly across from the village shop where you can find food and drink too.
At the village shop is where we’ll enter the Wilderness Reserve with Cockfield Hall appearing to the left and then the Yoxman statue to the right. Upon entering the reserve it’s about 20 minutes walk to Darsham station.
UPDATES FOR THIS WALK: concerning a few muddy bits, stiles, and cows.
The weather outlook for Saturday seems to be much the same as we’ve experienced the past few days: mainly cloudy and dry with maximum temperatures around 5C. The walk will be led by Aaron, Stefania, and Kate.
On the test walk there were a few muddy sections so please wear appropriate footwear. We’ll bypass the first section where the path crosses an arable field; the mud there was like glue. The other couple of sections just outside Yoxford are very short.
At the start, to avoid the arable muddy field, we’ll walk the pavement of the B1121 and then head onto Clay Hills Road. It won’t add much to the overall mileage. This minor road is part of the route but we’ll be on it a bit longer. If you have hi-vis you are welcome to bring it along; we’ll walk single file on this section going up the hill as there’s no pavement here. Our team will also have hi-vis vests.
Stile Update: The good news is that the diversion means we’ll avoid the first stile which does not have a dog door. The other stile is pet friendly with a sliding door.
Cattle Update: cows were on the route during the test walk within Rookery Park.
