Some of the area’s top crafters and makers will be at Lowestoft Railway Station this Saturday and Sunday as the Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnership and Lowestoft Central Project host their annual Arts and Crafts Weekend.
The event also brings a second opportunity to see the acclaimed Wherry Lines Posters Exhibition which saw students work with a professional artist to create modern versions of traditional 1920s railway advertising featuring Norwich, Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, Reedham and Berney Arms.
Admission is free to the event which runs on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June daily from 10am until 4pm. Stalls will be located both inside the stations restored Parcels Office and outside on the concourse and are set to include: handmade cakes and savouries, knitted crafts, resin jewellery, original art and paintings, handcrafted jewellery, handmade bath and body products, shell art, handmade crafts and plaques, crocheted flowers, handmade ceramics, cards and stationery, framed artworks, crafted cutlery, sewn and knitted crafts, woodcrafts, dog treats and hampers, resin art, bags and tie-dye clothing, knitted toys and baby products, needlefelt, garden ornaments, crystals and anime.
In addition, the stations volunteer run community rail shop and tourist information office will be open throughout for refreshments, books, crafts, souvenirs, railway signs and merchandise and a host of free guides to attractions across the region that will be open this summer.
Jacqui Dale from the Lowestoft Central Project said, “We are very much looking forward to hosting our annual Arts and Crafts Weekend with indoor and outdoor stalls featuring a host of talented artists, crafters and makers from across the area along with another chance to view the hugely popular Wherry Lines Posters Exhibition. With the event coinciding with festival weekend, the station is set to be a hive of activity.”
In recent years, Lowestoft station which dates back to 1855 has undergone a renaissance with buildings restored and repurposed providing space for community events and activities, doorways closed for over half a century have been reopened better connecting the station with the town centre and key events in the station’s history including the wartime schools evacuation and arrival of the Kindertransport are celebrated in a series of giant interpretation panels installed on the concourse.
As with all station events, organisers are offering free concourse pitches to local charities, for further information please email lowestoftcentral@gmail.com
